Fuerteventura

The group of islands called the Canary Islands is located in the Atlantic,  west of North Africa; the island of Fuerteventura is closest point at only 52  miles due west from the coast of Morocco. The seven main islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria,  Lanzarote,  Fuerteventura, La Gomera,  La Palma and El Hierro are all contained within  a  500km span.

Fuerteventura is  second largest of the islands, and has an area of 1660km2 (includes the island of Los Lobos, a smaller island just off the northernmost point of the island). Fuerteventura is thought to be the oldest island,  the result of a volcanic eruption some 20 million years ago.

The landscape of the island can be describes as desert like, and is due to its geographical location. The winds of the Sahara Desert only a few kilometres away bring the white sand to make up the beautiful beaches and famous sand dunes.   Corralejo sand dunes are the most popular of the islands resorts, are now protected as a Natural Park, along with the Island of Los Lobos.

The waters of the narrow strait that separates the two islands are also a natural reserve, teaming with many species of fish and larger sea dwellers, and being a superb site for diving. Jandia Peninsular, which is also a  Natural Park with the island having a third of its area as protected land or nature areas including some that are underwater.

The local population at the last census in 2001 was about  70,000, which really means there is only 38 people per km2, when you consider the other residents (non human) the goat. This number (not the goats) is increased many times by the thousands of tourists visiting this wonderful island time and time again.

A lot of people believe the Canary Islands were named after  birds, when n reality, it is the other way around.  All of the worlds birds named after the islands are directly descended from those originating here by the Spanish Conquistadors. Due to their attractive colours and singing abilities they were captured and taken back to other European countries as pets.  It is believed that the name was first given to

The  position of the islands, not too far above the tropic of Cancer, locates them in a subtopic  on approximately the same latitude as Orlando in Florida and Delhi, India. You would imagine that this would make for similar weather patterns and conditions to these cities, however the weather patterns cannot be considered as anything like similar. The Canaries all have a fabulous all year round climate with even temperatures, warm winters and temperate summers. The annual temperature variation is relatively small, with year round averages of 20 – 27 degrees Celsius.

The cooler winds, that come from the north and northeast,  moderate the climate, when the wind direction changes and the hot winds blow from across the Sahara Desert to the east, These "calima" winds means  Fuerteventura can experience summer temperatures of 40 degrees!.

Rainfall is also low and as little as 4 inches a year, which obviously cannot provide the island with an adequate fresh water supply, so we rely on a number of de-salination plants, which convert the salt water from the sea, to provide the all the fresh water necessary for both drinking and industrial use.
